فیلترهای شنی تحت فشار اغلب در فشار کاری 2 تا 10 bar کار می کنند. افت فشار در بستر شن و ماسه تمیز، معمولا خیلی کم است اما محسوس می باشد و از طرف کارخانه سازنده و در کاتالوگ آن شرکت مشخص می باشد. این نوع فیلتر ذرات بسیار ریز را از آب می گیرد. بسیاری از موارد وجود دارد که می تواند به سرعت روی فیلترها اثر گذاشته و آنها را مسدود کنند. فیلترهای شنی در استخرهایی که تازه گچ کاری شده باشند به سرعت مسدود می شوند. همچنین خاک، برگ، مواد زائد دیگر موجب کوتاه تر شدن چرخه فیلتراسیون گردند . بدون یک ماده منعقد کننده، فیلتر های شنی، فقط برای جدا کردن مواد جامد درشت از آب در گردش موثر است. اما در صورت اضافه کردن یک ماده منعقد کننده، ماسه، صافی بسیار موثری خواهد شد که جهت جدا کردن مواد جامد معلق و باکتری ها برای یک تصفیه خوب مناسب میگردد. آلوم (سولفات آلمینیوم ) ، ماده منعقد کننده معمول ، قبل از فیلتر به داخل آب استخر تزریق میشود تا به خوبی مواد معلق آب را منعقد نموده و آن ها را به اجزاء بزرگتری که به راحتی توسط فیلتر جدا میگردند، تقسیم نماید. وقتی ماده منعقد کننده به آب اضافه شود، در اثر واکنش مواد قلیایی آب، یک ماده رسوبی غیر قابل انحلال ژله مانند موسوم به فلاک تشکیل میشود. فلاک ، مواد ارگانیک ، ترکیبات رنگی و باکتری ها را به خود جذب کرده و به دام می اندازد. غربال ماسه ای فیلتر، این فلاک را از آب جدا میکند و نتیجتا آب زلال و تمیز از فیلتر خارج میگردد. یک مدت معین برای انجام واکنش شیمیایی باید قائل شد در غیر این صورت ممکن است فلاک در داخل استخر تشکیل گردیده و آب را کدر کند. بنابراین آلوم را باید طوری به مخزن مکش وارد کرد که فرصت لازم برای تشکیل فلاک موجود باشد.
